The Sun Prairie Police Department is investigating the burglary of an occupied residence in the 700 block of Derby Drive that occurred in the early morning hours of Monday, Oct. 12.

The suspects entered the home while the residents were asleep, took several items, and left on foot, according to an Oct. 12 release from the department.

Home security footage showed one of the suspects carrying what appeared to be a handgun.

The residents called police after discovering the suspects had been inside. No one was injured.

Sun Prairie police officers established a perimeter and searched the surrounding neighborhood using drones and K9 teams but did not locate the suspects. The Madison Police Department, the Dane County Sheriff’s Office, and the Wisconsin State Patrol assisted at the scene.

The investigation is ongoing. A garage door opener that does not belong to the residents was recovered inside the home, and investigators are working to determine whether other residences were entered.

Residents in the area of Derby Drive, Katherine Drive, and Carriage Drive are asked to check for missing property and to review exterior security camera footage from the early morning hours of Oct. 12 for any unusual activity.

“We understand that incidents like this can leave residents feeling uneasy. Our officers and detectives are actively following up on every lead in this investigation. Sun Prairie remains a safe community, and we want residents to feel confident in their homes and neighborhoods. We ask everyone to look out for one another and to report any suspicious activity to police. As a reminder, please keep exterior doors locked, including garage, patio, and sliding doors, and secure vehicle keys and garage door openers,” Sun Prairie Police Chief Kevin Warych said.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call the Sun Prairie Police Department at 608-837-7336. Anonymous tips may be made at 608-837-6300.
